1891-1895 St. Paul Directories: Jacob Bacigalupo

The 1890-91 Directory had no entry for Giacomo Bacigalupo. He reappears in the 1891-92 Directory rooming at 359 Jackson and calling himself "Jacob," a more anglicized version of the Italian "Giacomo." He is working as a clerk presumably for Giovanni Bacigalupo's confectionery at 359 Jackson.

The 1893 Directory has Jacob as a clerk for a John (Giovanni) Bacigalupo who runs the confectionery at 359 Jackson. He is still rooming at the same address.

The 1894 St. Paul Directory has no entry for Jacob Bacigalupo. I suspect he may have been out of the country. According to the 1900 Census, 1894 was the year of his marriage to Theresa. The 1895 Directory shows him living again at 166 Martin with August Bacigalupo which is confirmed by the 1895 MN Census. He is working with a Joseph Derbarbieri at a confectionery on 305 Jackson.

1895 MN Census: Jacob Bacigalupo

I finally was able to find Jacob's family in the 1895 MN Census. The difficulty was due to the fact that the transcriber had their last name as "Pacennpo."

1898 St. Paul Directory: Jacob Bacigalupo

In 1898 Jacob is still living with "August" at 166 Martin. However, it appears he is working at a confectionery at 188 E 7th. This is the same address at which Giovanni Bacigalupo was selling fruit in 1885-86.

1900 US Federal Census: Jacob Bacigalupo

The image from the 1900 Census below shows the families living at 166 Martin. Family 7 is the Jacob Bacigalupo family. It is interesting that box 10 indicates that Jacob and Theresa have only been married for 6 years. Box 11 indicates that she has only two children. So Felice and Amelia must have a different mother. In fact we know from Felice's death certificate that his mother's name is Celestine Lagomarcino. I suspect she may have died either during Amelia's birth in 1890 or shortly after since Jacob married Theresa in 1894. We also learn that Jacob immigrated in 1885 and Theresa in 1894. The ship's manifest for Felice mentions that he did not come over until 1903, so we don't find him with the family in the US at this time.

1904 St. Paul Directory: Jacob Bacigalupo

In 1904 Jacob is working with a partner, Joseph Debarbieri, at a confectionery at 155 E 3rd. Notice that Martin is now W Central av, and that in addition to August, there is also a Peter Bacigalupo boarding there.

1905 MN Census: Jake Bacigalupo

There is an addition to the Jacob and Theresa Bacigalupo family in the 1905 MN Census. His name is "Baci" Bacigalupo. I am pretty confident that he is Felice. He is the right age and also on the 1908 ship's manifest Felice indicated that he had been to the US before in 1903 which tracks with the 2 years period of residence listed here in box 11.

1909 St. Paul Directory: Jacob Bacigalupo

The 1909 Directory is the last one we have in which we find Jacob Bacigalupo. He is working as a driver for J. M. McDonnell and still living at 166 W Central av. His daughter, Amelia, who is boarding at the same address is listed working as a seamstress for A. F. McBride. The 1905 MN Census above also listed her as a seamstress. As it happens, Phillippe F. Bacigalupo is the "Felice 2" we met in the Introduction to this blog.

1910 US Federal Census: Felice "Jack" and Maria "Thresa" Bacigalupo

When I first saw the 1910 Census for 166 W Central in St. Paul, I thought that "Jack and Thresa Bacigaluppo" were Jacob and Teresa Bacigalupo. But there was a problem with the ages and with the number of years they had been in America. The ages fit Felice and his wife, Maria, who are most likely going by their middle names or a nickname. Interestingly, their lodger, Carmelo Terrile, is the brother-in-law of Felice 2 mentioned in the Introduction. A year later Felice and Theresa named their first son, Joseph Carmelo Bacigalupo.

Notice also that Felice's sister, Amelia Bacigalupo, is boarding with the Segale family where she is listed as a "cousin." It would be interesting to find out that connection.
